This past weekend my friend Sebastian and I drove up to Los Angeles for two different photoshoots that I had planned, plus we just to hang out and do all of the tourist things while we were there. That morning Sebastian and I got up, picked up some breakfast and drove up to LA. The drive was great, no traffic and it only took about 40 minutes to get there.
The first place we went when we got to LA was the Art’s District because we were going to meet this really cool chick named Kelly Lauren. If you don’t know of her, she has a cool Instagram feed, a YouTube channel that she vlogs on and talks about make up, fashion and other different things.
So we drive up there and park next to some really trendy church that was playing some loud live rock music, like none of that really bad christian rock on the radio, but like some indie type stuff. Because when we first went by I just thought it was a venue. But nope, and we found out because we were trying look in and someone came up and gave us a flyer. And it sure was a church. Next door to this church was the coffee shop that Kelly told me to meet her at. She was late… but no worries, so Sebastian and I just walked around the area looking for some shooting locations. We ended up finding tons of great spots to use as backdrops with run down buildings to cool graffiti art, so pretty much everything I don’t normally get to shoot with in Orange County.
When she finally got there she was wearing this really big fur coat with black pants and it looked really cool! I really wanted to shoot so we just talked for a minute and went right to this cool gas pump that I saw earlier in the day walking around the area. That gas pump gave me some of my favorite shots of the shoot with the shinny gas pumps on the left with a gas sign above her head and an abandoned building in the background.
Once I got those shots we walked right across the street and shot on steps, those images were pretty good too, but some of my favorites of the shoot came from the back alley behind the steps. In that alley there was tons of graffiti and old couches, wood and trash everywhere which gave the images this very urban look , which I was hoping to get with this shoot.
In the alley, we first shot with some graffiti then moved to shooting on some old couches and trash type of things. Shooting with trash not that cool right? But I promise you they were some pretty interesting images. Down at the end of the alley there was a red garage door with graffiti on it and there we took a good amount of shots because I was loving all of the images from this spot with the light coming from above and I was getting some interesting lens flares in the images.
When we finished with that spot we walked down the street and shot at a couple different spots, none I liked too much but I did get one shot of her sitting on a wall leaning forward with her hair slightly hanging down. Which looked amazing!
From there we walked back over to where we started at the coffee shop and turned down the next street, that street was a perfect shoot location, minus the cars parked everywhere but they had so many different colored and styled buildings around the street.
We started by shooting with a yellow wall which gave some good shots of her without the fur jacket because of the contrast of the black shirt to the wall, after that we got some amazing shots in front of this neon looking sign with a white wall and the fur jacket. The images were great, they gave a very retro feel and some more variety to the shoot.
Under that neon sign was big indent into the building that was a perfect square and perfectly black, this little spot might have been my favorite find because the shots in there all felt like they were studio images with the black background.
Once we shot there, we took some photos at a couple different walls, stairs and other things like earlier in the shoot and all of them came out pretty great. Because we had been shooting for awhile and was happy with the images I decided to call it a day on that shoot.
Because I still had one more shoot to do later that day I didn’t want to drive too far, so we went to one of my favorite places to eat in the area Philippe’s! The home of the original french dip. I highly recommend that you go eat there! If you want to hear more about this restaurant my mom has her own blog that talks about food, travel and crafty type things! So check out her post about Philippe’s here: http://www.occhick.com/best-original-french-dip-sandwich-downtown-la/
When we finished our lunch I headed to my next shoot! This next shoot was with Savannah Jade and I will try to have a post about this shoot soon as well!
